Dealing with high Gas and Electricity bills Debt

Due to the crisis in energy prices, millions of people are now paying more for gas and electricity. Numerous people worry about their financial situation, and how they will pay their energy bills and stay warm.

Contact your supplier as soon as you can if you are having trouble paying your energy bills or if you have already missed a payment. Your supplier can assist you in a number of ways. Depending on your circumstances, they might be able to provide you with support. Help examples include:

  • a temporary payment suspension or a decrease in your payments;

  • information on how to get the financial assistance that could be available, such as grants or benefits you might be eligible for to pay off energy debt; and

  • Guidance on energy efficiency.

Ask your supplier to explain how your direct debit payment has been calculated if you pay via direct debit. Your supplier might be able to lower the direct debit if:

  • Taking meter readings is covered in the section below. It is currently based on an inflated estimate of how much energy you use annually.

  • It also includes a sum to pay back a supplier debt.
